Dmitry’s engagements for the saison 2023-24 includes the performance of Max Reger's Symphonic Rhapsody with conductor Jakub Przybycien and The Lucerne Collective (14/10/23, Lachen, CH), Igor Stravinsky's Violin Concerto with Delyana Lazarova and Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (6/12/23, Berlin, DE), and Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Concerto with Johannes Schlaefli and Collegium Musicum Basel (22/03/24, Basel, CH),
On his continuous musical quest, Dmitry Smirnov is always ready to embark on adventures with his violin that test his artistry to the limit. His most recent collaboration, with conductor Heinz Holliger and Kammerorchester Basel (released on Prospero Classical), features French Romantic repertoire (Lalo, Saint-Saëns etc) played on gut strings and includes Smirnov‘s own arrangements of folk music and Lied repertoire.
His first solo album (Bach, Bartok, Schneeberger, First Hands Record, 2021) explores the variegated colours of the violin and the use of improvisation in such works as Bela Bartok's iconic Sonata for Solo Violin. Reviews note the young violinist ́s capacity "to dominate the extreme virtuosity of the writing with an astounding audacity and to captivate with the richness of a seemingly unlimited imagination" (Diapason, Avril 2021).
When devising his programmes and projects, Smirnov likes to take human and political contexts into consideration. His second project with FHR includes works for solo violin by Eugene Ysaÿe together with some of the 20th-century master's friends - lesser-known composers of the past, whose works are shifted into the spotlight.
Although Smirnov has been known to draw inspiration from such popular musicians as Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Justin Vernon, Pat Metheny or James Blake, he has above all been fortunate enough to work with some of his favourite artists from the classical scene. It is his violin teacher in Basel, Rainer Schmidt of the Hagen Quartet, who provided Smirnov with the foundations for chamber music-making. Smirnov's recent live performances include Camille Saint-Saëns‘ Le Carnaval des animaux with Katia and Marielle Labèque, salon music by Niccolò Paganini with the lutenist Luca Pianca, violin concertos by Locatelli, Haydn and Beethoven conducted by Giovanni Antonini, and chamber music concerts with Ilya Gringolts, Sol Gabetta, and L'Ensemble Fratres.
The enormous inspiration of working with such groups as Il Pomo Doro and Il Giardino Armonico has also encouraged Smirnov to join or create brand new projects like M.A.D, "Trio Infernale“, "Blattspiel Quartet" and "hypocantus".

En quête musicale permanente, Dmitry Smirnov est toujours prêt à s'embarquer dans des aventures avec son violon qui mettent son art à l'épreuve. Auf seiner ständigen musikalischen Suche ist Dmitry Smirnov immer bereit, sich mit seiner Geige auf Abenteuer einzulassen, die seine Kunstfertigkeit bis an die Grenzen testen. Seine jüngste Zusammenarbeit mit dem Schweizer Dirigenten Heinz Holliger und dem Kammerorchester Basel (erschienen bei Prospero Classical) umfasst Konzerte der französischen Romantik (Lalo und Saint-Saëns), die auf Darmsaiten gespielt werden, sowie Smirnovs eigene Bearbeitungen von Volksmusik und Liedrepertoire.

Дмитрий Смирнов родился в Санкт-Петербурге в музыкальной семье. В возрасте 11 лет стал победителем I Международного конкурса скрипачей имени Давида Ойстраха (Москва). .
Принимал участие в мастер-классах Леонидаса Кавакоса, Райнера Шмидта (Hagen Quartett) Ирвина Ардитти, Эберхарда Фельца, Джованни Антонини, Вадима Глузмана. Обладатель именной стипендии легендарной скрипачки Иды Гендель.
В 2008 году Д.Смирнов получил вторую премию на Международном конкурсе Иегуди Менухина (Кардифф), после чего был приглашен выступить на сцене концертного зала Wigmore Hall в Лондоне; в 2010 году стал лауреатом Первого Всероссийского музыкального конкурса по специальности «скрипка» (Москва). В 2015 году стал лауреатом первой премии на конкурсе им. Тибора Варги (Швейцария).
Выступал на сцене Carnegie Hall (Нью-Йорк, 2007), в залах Санкт-Петербургской филармонии им. Д.Д.Шостаковича, в Nikkei Hall в Токио, в Большом зале Московской консерватории и Московской Филармонии; выступал с оркестром "Questa Musica"(Россия), с камерным оркестром Лозанны и с оркестром “Арговия” (Швейцария). В ноябре 2018-го стал лауреатом третьей премии и обладателем специального приза на конкурсе Long-Thibaud-Crespin в Париже. В сентябре 2021 года Дмитрий стал обладателем второй премии на престижном международном конкурсе радиовещателей Германии, где в том числе взял несколько других премий среди которых уникалная запись диска для известного лейбла GENUIN.
С декабря 2018 года вместе пианистом Денисом Линником и кларнетистом Хосе Луис Инглезом является основателем проекта "Camerata Rhein"(Швейцария), а также с сентября 2018 года входит в состав струнного квартета основанного в 2011 году венгерским скрипачом Барнабашом Келеменом. В январе 2019 года Смирнов был приглашен в барочный ансамбль “Il Giardino Armonico”(Италия) для осуществления концертного тура и записи для проекта “Haydn 2032”. Является артистом Санкт Петербургского Дома Музыки с 2011 года.
Играет на скрипке немецкого мастера Филиппа Бонхоффера работы 2018 года.
